“Under the Old Covenant, the High Priest over the house of Israel, on the Day of Atonement, entered into the innermost sanctuary of Israel’s temple, which was called the Holiest of all. This is where the blood of the animal sacrifice was sprinkled on the mercy seat to make atonement for the sins of Israel for that year. On the breastplate of God’s anointed High Priest were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. No other nation was represented. There was no atonement made for any of the Gentile nations. The High Priest of Israel represented only those whose names were written on his breastplate. All of this pointed to Christ and His church. Jesus Christ is God’s anointed High Priest over the House of Israel, spiritual Israel, God’s blood-bought church. After establishing a righteousness for His people by His perfect obedience to the law of God, Jesus Christ laid down His life for His sheep. All of God’s chosen people were purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ, God’s sacrificial Lamb. After He had risen from the grave, Jesus Christ entered into heaven itself to appear in the presence of God as a representative of all those whose names were written in The Lamb’s Book of Life. Those names were written on the heart of God’s anointed High Priest, Jesus Christ our Saviour. He represents only those who were given to Him by God the Father in the eternal covenant of grace. He represents only those He purchased with His own precious blood. Because Christ met ALL the conditions of the eternal covenant, He has the right, and He exercises that right by His own sovereign power, to give eternal life to as many as God the Father gave Him (John 17:1 - 3). Our Great High Priest ‘obtained eternal redemption for us’. This man, this God-man, because He has an unchangeable priesthood, is able to save to the uttermost all who come to God by Him, seeing He ever liveth to make intercession for them (Heb. 7:24 - 25). Brethren, because Christ has entered into the Holiest of holies for us, into heaven itself, we’re as sure of heaven as if we are already there. This is GOOD NEWS to those who have been given faith to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.
