"PERFECT LOVE CASTETH OUT FEAR"
I John 4:18

Gene Harmon

"Perfect love casteth out fear"-I John 4:18

"WHAT FEAR?" This cannot be speaking to the unregenerate man. Romans 3:18 says: "There is no fear of God before their eyes." Oh, they might have a fear of dying. They might even have a fear of going to hell. But there is no fear of God before their eyes. True heart-felt reverential fear of the Lord is the work of the Holy Spirit of God. According to the inspired Word of God, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. When one of God's elect experiences this fear, when the Holy Spirit brings true conviction of sin, that's only the beginning. God will not leave His blood-bought child in that fearful condition.. "Perfect love casteth out fear." This clearly shows that the Holy Spirit will turn the eyes of the quickened sinner away from self. There is nothing perfect in us. Perfection is found in the Lord Jesus Christ. Everything that is needed to make a hell-deserving sinner acceptable in God's sight is found in the sinners Substitute and only in the sinners Substitute. We are commanded to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, strength and mind and our neighobor as ourselves. Who could ever honestly say that they could keep that commandment? The sinners Substitute, the God-man, the Lord Jesus Christ, that's who! It was perfect love that moved Him to condescend to come to this earth and become a man. It was perfect love that moved Him to do all things that pleased God the Father. It was perfect love that moved Him to become obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Perfect love to God the Father, and perfect love for all those His Father gave Him. When God is pleased to give us faith to believe that we perfectly obeyed all of God's laws in our Substitute; when this faith moves us to believe that our Substitute suffered and bled and died for all our sins; when we sincerely believe that Jesus Christ was raised again for our justification; when we embrace Him by faith as our Lord and our God; when God the Father reveals to us that He loves everyone in Christ with the same love that He has for His only begotten Son, and that we are in Christ, the "Perfect love casteth out fear." We don't fear man, we don't fear death, and we don't fear the wrath to come. The love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit and we know that absolutely nothing can seperate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
