In days of old, when tribes fought against each other, the winning tribe had the right, and exercised the right, to gather the spoil from those who lost the battle. No one was foolish enough to think they could gather the spoil before the battle was won. But after the battle was over, can you imagine the shouts of joy and the squeals of delight amongst the members of the winning tribe as they gathered the great riches that was rightfully theirs? In our text from Psalm 119:162, the Word of God is drawing our attention to riches far greater than what this world could ever produce. This is referring to The Unsearchable Riches of Christ. The riches of the electing love of God the Father; the riches of the redeeming love of God the Son; the riches of the sanctifying love of God the Holy Spirit. Every enlightened child of God knows that we have already won the victory through the finished work of Jesus Christ our Saviour. All of our enemies have been destroyed by our Conquering Captain. God's holy justice has been perfectly satisfied by Jesus Christ. Everything He did was pleasing to God the Father. His perfect obedience to God's law is our righteousness. When our Saviour cried "It is finished", and laid down His life for His own chosen people, the law's last demand was met. The law has no claim on those who are in Christ Jesus. When our Sovereign Lord manifested His power over death by taking up His life again, He led captivity captive, showing that He had spoiled principalities and powers, making a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it. This same Jesus, who was despised and rejected of men, is now in heaven, where He has been crowned King of kings and Lord of lords. Every thing in this whole universe is under His sovereign control. Those who have been delivered from the power of darkness have been translated into His glorious kingdom, and we rejoice at His Word "as one that findeth great spoil." We've been made to sit in heavenly places in Christ our Federal Head. All of God's elect are as sure of heaven as if we are already there. There is no condemnation (no judgment) to them who are in Christ Jesus. Not one thing can be laid to our charge. Nothing can separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Everything the guilty sinner needs to take him from that awful pit he was in, to eternal bliss in the presence of God Almighty, is found in Christ and only in Christ. He is our wisdom, our righteousness, our sanctification, and our redemption. It pleased God the Father that in Christ Jesus should all fulness dwell. Christ is EVERYTHING to EVERY BELIEVER. As we read the Word of God, we gather the riches that rightfully belong to those who were redeemed by the precious blood of God our Saviour, as one that findeth great spoil.
