Consider these five things:
1. He who fell into sin is man. "Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned" (Romans 5:12). God created man upright, but Adam fell into sin, and when he did, all of his seed (mankind in its entirety) fell with him. "There is not a just man upon earth that doeth good and sinneth not" (Ecclesiastes 7:20).
2. He who jests about sin is a fool. "Fools make a mock at sin: but among the righteous there is favor" (Proverbs 14:9). How absurd to make light of sin and to scoff at the reproofs of the Bible against it. God has promised a day when He will sit in judgment upon all those who live and die in their sins. The Lord Jesus said to the cynics of His day, "Ye shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come" (John 8:21). Let others embrace sin to their bosom if they will, but let us be wise and acknowledge our transgressions before God and seek an atonement for them.
3. He who confesses his sin to the Lord is forgiven. By the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the Psalmist David wrote, "I acknowledged my sin unto Thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and Thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah" (Psalm 32:5). "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy" (Proverbs 28:13). "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9).
4. He Who died to put away our sins is the dear Savior. "Thou shalt call His Name JESUS: for He shall save His people from their sins" (Matthew 1:21). "...Now once in the end of the world hath He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself" (Hebrews 9:26). "Who being the brightness of His glory, and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on High" (Hebrews 1:3). "Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by Whose stripes ye were healed" (1 Peter 2:24).
5. He Who forgives sin is God. "Who can forgive sins, but God alone?" (Luke 5:21) None can forgive sin except that One against Whom we have sinned, and the only way He can do it in a just way was to pour out His vengeance upon sin, which is exactly what He did when our Savior bore our sins in His own body on the tree. "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned everyone to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on Him the iniquity of us all" (Isaiah 53:6). "Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. "Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile" (Psalm 32:1-2). "I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His Name's sake" (1 John 2:12).
