A WORD TO PARENTS

Jim Byrd

Over the years I have heard parents bemoan the fact that their grown children no longer desire to sit under the sound of the gospel of Christ. This is heartbreaking to all who love the message of grace. Aside from gentle reminders and incessant prayer, there is nothing we can do about their lack of interest and attendance when they grow older because the control we once had disappears when they leave the nest. However, there is much we can do while they are still under our authority. Bring them to the house of the Lord for all the services. Every week we have Bible classes for the youth in which they will be taught the Scriptures by instructors who are committed to the gospel and who love our young people. There is a veritable wealth of Biblical instruction available to our children and grandchildren. Moreover, there are the worship services where parents and children sit together, sing together and, with the Word of God opened, listen together to the delightful story of salvation for sinners through the "only Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus" (1 Timothy 2:5). There is no more important time spent together as a family than the time spent in public worship. It is a fact that we cannot impart to our children a love for the truth, but it is vital that we make certain they are under the sound of the truth. It is our responsibility as parents to see to it that our children are regularly exposed to the gospel of grace. As concerned parents, we certainly seek to make every provision for our children. Let us not, therefore, be negligent of that which is of the utmost importance, their spiritual needs. The Lord has entrusted these little ones to us. God help us to do all we can toward satisfying the obligation He has laid upon us to "bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord" (Ephesians 6:4). What does it mean to bring a child up in this way? It means we instruct them in the Word of God, set before them a good example of one who loves Christ and seeks His glory, pray with them and for them, and bring them to the house of worship.
