A sinner must be convinced by the Spirit of grace of the holy character of God. He must be made to realize something of his utter sinfulness and inability to please the Lord in any way. There has to be some consciousness of an infinite debt owed to the justice of God which the sinner can in no way pay. Only upon being made aware of these truths will the gospel of Christ be good news indeed! It is then that the command "behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world" will be obeyed. The gospel becomes to him good tidings of great joy. How thrilling to learn that the Son of God, Who Himself made the world, by His own obedience and sufferings unto death, has made full reparation and atonement for sin. What good news that He is risen indeed, a sure proof that His work of redemption met the approval of the Father, satisfied divine justice, put away the sins of His people, and reconciled sinners to God. Now the light of the knowledge of Jesus Christ shines in his heart, and the preciousness of the Mediator appears to him in all His glory and grace. Now the way of salvation in Christ is seen to be wise and excellent. Now the convinced sinner flees to the Son of God and trusts this blessed Redeemer for salvation, for deliverance from guilt and sin and for full forgiveness. Now the song of his heart is, "My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus ' Name."
