I do not find in the Bible that the grace of God is offered to sinners. It is not presented in this sacred book as being something the Lord wants to give, but His purpose is frustrated by unwilling sinners. His grace is given freely, without contribution on the part of sinners. Grace is dispensed through Christ, it is given to whomever God wants to give it and grace is the work of God within chosen sinners. What does the Book say about this grace?
1. The grace of God was given to sinners in Christ from eternity. "Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began" (2 Timothy 1:9).
2. The grace of God is bestowed freely upon the undeserving. "Being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in His blood, to declare His righteousness..." (Romans 3:24-25).
3. The grace of God is altogether a gift. "For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory" (Psalm 84:11).
4. The grace of God is altogether a sovereign gift. The Lord said to Moses, "I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy" (Exodus 33:19).
5. The grace of God is intolerant of any mixture of works on the part of the sinner. "And if by grace, then is it no more of works; otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work" (Romans 11:6).
6. The grace of God is in Christ and is granted to unworthy sinners by Christ. "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,)full of grace and truth. And of His fulness have all we received, and grace for grace" (John 1:14, 16).
7. The grace of God will be magnified in that eternal day when the Lord Jesus Christ will effectually bring the last sinner into His glorious kingdom, made righteous in Him. What a day of rejoicing that will be as the shouts of "Grace, grace unto it" (Zechariah 4:7) rise up from all the saints of God.
