In the Scriptures, it is never the sheep who lead, but the Shepherd. Since the Shepherd is directing, it is impossible for the sheep to ever go where the Shepherd has not already been. "And when He putteth forth His own sheep, He goeth before them, and the sheep follow Him: for they know His voice" (John 10:4). Rest assured, the sheep will never be called to venture upon any path that the Shepherd has not already traveled. He therefore says, "Follow me." Children of God, let us not be afraid to follow Christ wherever He may direct. We may be certain that He will never lead where He has not gone Himself; and if He has already gone there, He knows the way and will safely lead us through. If He says, "Follow Me into the valley of trial," then don't be afraid, He has been there Himself. If He says, "Follow Me into this vale of tears," follow Him for He once was the "Man of sorrows and acquainted with griefs." If He says "Follow me into these deep waters," there is no need to be fearful. He is the Master of the seas and has passed through them Himself. And when He says, "Follow me into death," there is no need for panic for His blessed feet have trodden that path too, and He ever lives to see us safely through. "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me."
