THE SIDE NEAREST HEAVEN

Jim Byrd

Yes, it is a fact that on January 11th, I turned fifty-three. I used to think someone that age was really old. It is amazing how my thoughts have changed. Do you suppose it is because I have a different perspective now? I am two years older than my father was when he went home to be with the Lord. A dear friend sent me a birthday card and wrote a little reminder note: "Just think, in seventeen years you'll be seventy!" Does growing older trouble you? Quite honestly, it's just fine with me. No, I don't look forward to growing more feeble, but think about it - for a child of God, the older the better. "Now is our salvation nearer than when we believed" (Romans 13:11). We are nearer our everlasting home than when we first began our journey. Each earthly day brings us closer to that eternal day when we shall be with Christ. I was reading a sermon by Mr. Spurgeon and he said some things pertaining to old age that I want to share with you. "When a man is of ripe age, or a woman either, why should they not let it be known? (In other words, don't be ashamed of how old you are!) Why should they not number their days and keep the reckoning before their own minds? If all things are right with you and me, the older we are the better. Someone said to a Christian man, 'What is your age?' He replied, 'I am on the right side of seventy.' They found out that he was seventy-five, and they said, 'You told us you were on the right side of seventy.' 'So I am,' he answered; 'that is the right side, for it is the side which is nearest heaven, my blessed home.' Why should not all Christians think so? They do think so, when they judge rightly."
