Much can be told about a pastor and his church by what is on the sign out front. It is startling sometimes to see what a church advertises. Let me give you some that I have seen.
"Jesus will help your life." That is as far removed from truth as black from white. What life do you have to help? and you hath he quickened who were dead (Eph. 2:1). The sinner is a corpse spiritually. If our Lord Jesus Christ quickens, it simply means that He gives that which is non-existent.
Now here is the truth of the matter. Christ, who IS our life (Col. 3:4). He does not give life, but He becomes life. In regeneration the dead sinner hears and sees and believes on Him, and for the first time he LIVES. That is much more than "Jesus will help your life."
"The way to heaven: turn right and go straight." How about that for the perfect formula for works salvation? Old dead sinners love that, because anytime they want to they just make a right turn and go straight. Nothing to it! All the time I had thought that the blessed Savior was the way to heaven. I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. (John 14:6). Since sin is the barrier between men and God, then sin must be put away. How? By turning right and going straight? Or is it this way? (1 John 1:8) .... the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth from all sin.
Are we being too critical and picky? Of course not! All these cute slogans on "Signs of Ignorance" give a sinner hope in himself. I think we must destroy that false hope, and then perhaps some dead sinners will cry out as the leper in Matt. 8:2, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean. Sinners must be made to bow at His sovereign throne, for it is He that gives life to whom He will. "Signs of Ignorance" won't do.
