It has been stated that when one is convicted of sin and converted, he takes sides with God against himself in admitting that God would be just to damn him based on his sin. This is part of true Holy Spirit conviction, but if it goes no further, it no more than legal, natural conscience conviction. True Holy Spirit conviction is not simply admitting that God would be just to damn me based on my sins. It is knowing and being confident that God can and will justify me based on the imputed righteousness of Christ. This causes us to rejoice in Christ and have no confidence in the flesh. So the real issue of salvation is not simply in seeing how guilty and vile we are based on our sin. It is in seeing the only remedy for our guilt and vileness. It is in where we find relief! Some even find relief in their admission of guilt. This is just as self-righteous as if they refused to admit of guilt based on their sin. If we find relief anywhere but in Christ Jesus alone, and based on His blood and righteousness alone, we still have not taken sides with God against ourselves. Christ is our confidence, not our insecurity. Christ is our hope, not our despair.
