The book of Nehemiah is a book of revival. Christ is our Nehemiah. He sees His church in ruins… that we are living below our inheritance… and He comes down to deliver us (Neh 2).
In chapter 6, the enemies of the gospel attempt to get Him to come down, but He will never change His purpose–(vs3) "And I [Nehemiah] sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?" In spite of the attacks, our Lord Jesus is doing the same thing that He has always been doing. He is proclaiming His gospel in the power of His Spirit to give grace unto His chosen people. Eph 1:11 says, "In whom [Christ] we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of His own will."
All things, for the believer, have been predestinated to give us our portion of the inheritance. The inheritance is the unsearchable riches of Christ and all of the things that He has purchased for us. In Him, and because of Him, we have forgiveness through His blood, even redemption from all our sins. And, we have the right to enjoy its power. We have obtained by inheritance all of the blessings and good things that God does for His people. And, He is using the World Trade Center attacks to give us this predestinated purpose. For us, it was predestinated that we would have comfort and a good understanding while so many are tossed and distressed. He predestinated that we would come to Him amidst all of this and receive the joy of knowing WHO sits upon the throne ruling all things and the glorious PURPOSE for which all things happen.
Have you come to enjoy Him, not in spite of everything that has happened, but THROUGH everything that has happened? This is His predestinated purpose for His people. And, He will use these tragic events and all of the pain that they have caused and shall cause for years to come, to bring His elect unto Himself. Truly, He "worketh all things after the council of his own will".
